SUMMARY:From Fanny to the Nanny: The Evolution of Jewish Women in American Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Join actor and television maven Callie Raynor for a lively exploration of how Jewish women have been portrayed on the small screen\, beginning with Molly Goldberg\, America’s first Jewish TV mom\, who debuted in 1949. Through the work of stars and creators such as Fran Drescher\, Julia Louis-Dreyfus\, and Rachel Bloom\, we’ll trace the evolution of these portrayals\, consider the impact of early Jewish characters\, and reflect on both the progress made and the gaps in representation that still remain in American television. The program will conclude with a special conversation about Callie’s own experience co-creating the contemporary comedy series Front of House\, offering an insider’s perspective on Jewish storytelling today. Brought to you by the Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program and sponsored by TBS Adult Learning. \nCallie Raynor is an actor\, writer\, and TV super fan based in New York City. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Texas at Austin\, where she earned a BA in theater and a BS in radio-television-film with a focus on film and TV history. Callie received a graduate certificate from the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and has performed for audiences across the tri-state area and beyond. She is the co-creator\, writer\, and producer of the mockumentary series\, Front of House.

SUMMARY:"All Theology is Autobiography": Developing a Personal Understanding of God
DESCRIPTION:“All Theology is Autobiography” is the title of a reflective\, inspiring article by Rabbi Laura Geller\, Rabbi Emerita of Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills\, CA. It is also a profound and sacred truth. The main goal of this four-session course is to provide a context for each participant to engage in developing a personal theology. What in your life has contributed to your personal “torah”\, the essence of your evolving character? When have you felt close to God? When have you prayed\, really prayed? We will enter into a conversation that spans Jewish time trying to learn about God by reflecting on our life experiences. Along the way we will “meet” some of the great Jewish theologians of all time and of our time. \nRabbi Katzew is Associate Professor Emeritus of Jewish Thought and Education and Senior Educator of the EMA Program at HUC-JIR. He earned a doctorate at the Hebrew University in Jewish Thought and Education and led a team of educators at the Union for Reform Judaism that was responsible for designing\, developing\, and implementing curricular resources for early childhood centers\, congregational schools\, day schools and adult learning communities throughout the world. Jan is the author of several popular and scholarly articles in multiple fields. We are blessed to have Rabbi Katzew as a TBS Scholar throughout the year!
