SUMMARY:Scholar-in-Residence Lecture: Diaspora in Exile
DESCRIPTION:Professor Jonathan Kaufman\, Director of Northeastern University School of Journalism\nDiaspora in Exile\nWe Jews\, in the Diaspora\, have reshaped and enriched Judaism and Jewish history. Today much of the creativity in modern Judaism comes from America–women in the rabbinate\, the embrace of LGBTQ\, the fight for social justice. So too we face challenges like the rise of antisemitism and debates over Israel. What are the stories the media should be telling? What should be the proper role of colleges and universities?\nRegister: t-b-s.me/SiR2025

SUMMARY:Scholar-in-Residence Chinese Dinner and Lecture: The Rival Jewish Dynasties that Shaped China
DESCRIPTION:Dinner and Lecture 6:30 PM Dinner\, 7:30 PM Lecture Chinese Food Dinner: $25 per member\, $35 per nonmember\nThe Rival Jewish Dynasties that Shaped China\nThe Sassoons and the Kadoories stood astride Chinese business and politics for more than one hundred seventy-five years\, profiting from the Opium Wars; surviving Japanese occupation; courting Chiang Kai-shek; and nearly losing everything as the Communists swept into power. In his widely praised book\, The Last Kings of Shanghai\, Jonathan Kaufman tells the remarkable history of how these families ignited an economic boom and opened China to the world but remained blind to the country’s deep inequality and to the political turmoil on their doorsteps. It’s a story stretching from Baghdad to Hong Kong to Shanghai to London\, a tale of opium smuggling\, family rivalry\, political intrigue\, and survival. The Boston Globe raves: “In vivid detail… examines the little-known history of two extraordinary dynasties”\nRegister: t-b-s.me/SiR2025

SUMMARY:Scholar-in-Residence Lecture: Building Coalitions
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1960s\, Abraham Joshua Heschel and Martin Luther King marched together in Selma for Civil Rights. That was more than a symbolic gesture. Two thirds of the whites who went south to integrate busses and register Black voters were Jewish. Three quarters of the money King and other Black Civil Rights leaders raised came from Jewish donors. Since that time there have been fissures and strains in the relationship between the Black and Jewish communities. What important steps can be taken to foster the healthiest relationships between our communities? Drawing on decades of research\, interviews and studies of figures from Jesse Jackson to Harvard Prof. Henry Louis Gates\, Jr to Barack Obama\, Jonathan Kaufman looks at the roots of the Black-Jewish alliance\, how it has changed\, and the steps forward.\nRegister: t-b-s.me/SiR2025
