SUMMARY:Needham Community Yom HaShoah Commemoration: Reflections on a Family Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as Dr. Alan Stern shares his family’s story of Holocaust survival and strength. Alan will reflect upon his father’s and uncle’s childhood growing up in an antisemitic and war-torn Germany. Theirs is an inspirational journey of bravery\, hope and resilience. Although discussing a personal Holocaust story is challenging\, Alan feels it is crucial for as many people as possible to hear these stories. Alan will be speaking this night in memory of his father\, Sam; his grandmother\, Karolina; his grandfathers\, Arthur and David; and in memory of the six million whose stories need to be told. Our evening will conclude with prayers of memorial and light refreshments. His parents\, Sam and Doris\, settled in Needham after stints in Florida and Baltimore. Alan has been a primary care pediatrician for over 30 years and has given back to our Needham community through his service on the Needham Board of Health and as the Needham school physician. Alan is also an Instructor at Harvard Medical School and is a speaker for Facing History and Ourselves. Alan joyfully shares his life with his wife\, Lori and together they are proud parents of Reuben\, Jeremy\, and Celia.

SUMMARY:The Michael Sockol Jewish Writers Fund: Traveling the Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:What exactly makes someone Jewish? Is being Jewish an ethnic characteristic\, is it based on beliefs\, or is it cultural? In his book\, Fragile Branches: Travels Through the Jewish Diaspora\, Professor James Ross recounts his journeys among the world’s most far-flung Jewish communities in countries including Uganda\, India\, Peru\, and Brazil. Mr. Ross will describe how these communities discovered Judaism\, and explore their distinctive practices and rituals. As well\, we will learn the ways that geographical isolation allowed for both the preservation and evolution of Jewish traditions. Mr. Ross forcefully argues for the integrity of his subjects’ religious identity\, and against parochial notions of Judaism that would exclude them: “These disparate communities are searching for their places in the world. How we … respond to them is nothing less than a reflection of how we look at ourselves.” When not traveling across the Jewish diaspora\, Mr. Ross taught at Northeastern University where he was the Stotsky Professor of Jewish Historical and Cultural Studies.\nContact: Adult Learning

Launching Liberty tells the remarkable story of how FDR partnered with private businessmen to produce cargo freighters longer than a football field – ships he affectionately dubbed “ugly ducklings.” As German U-boats maintained their attacks\, Roosevelt initiated a bold nationwide competition among shipyards to see who could construct ships the fastest. Driven by duty and the thrill of innovation\, workers reduced the shipbuilding timeline from months to weeks and then to days. Doug will recount the untold and inspiring stories of those who rose to the challenge during one of America’s most critical and tumultuous times. \nA prolific writer and journalist\, Doug\, in addition to his new World War II book\, Launching Liberty\, is the author of three books\, including the best-selling The Race Underground. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore how Greek civilization and the spread of Hellenism profoundly shaped Judaism—its language\, philosophy\, law\, politics\, and engagement with the wider world. From the Septuagint to Jewish life in Alexandria\, from the Maccabean response to the intellectual legacy of Philo\, he will trace the deep imprint of Greek ideas on the development of Jewish thought and identity. As we celebrate Chanukah\, a holiday born out of the encounter between Judaism and the Hellenistic world\, this program offers a timely and meaningful reflection on how Athens helped shape Jerusalem. Presented by the Orange County Community Scholars Program and sponsored by TBS Adult Learning. \nDr. David Mendelsohn holds a Ph.D. in Classics & Linguistics\, an M.A. in Archaeology/Linguistics\, and an Honours B.A. in Classical Studies. A recipient of Canada’s prestigious Trudeau Prize\, he lives in Jerusalem with his wife\, Ronny\, and their three children. For over 25 years\, Dr. Mendelsohn has researched Jewish communities across the world\, including in Germany\, Spain\, Portugal\, Morocco\, Eastern Europe\, Turkey\, Greece\, Italy\, Bulgaria\, Egypt\, and India. Combining his expertise as a historian\, archaeologist\, and sociolinguist\, he uncovers the unique influences of local cultures while identifying the shared threads that connect these diverse Jewish communities. A seasoned scholar and educator\, Dr. Mendelsohn has previously led Greece trips and specializes in Islamic Studies\, Arab-Israeli culture\, Bedouin law\, and the intersection of language and culture in Arabic and Hebrew.

The life of Yitzhak Rabin mirrored the life of the people and state of Israel. In his own words\, “The joy of the Jewish people is always mixed with sorrow – the huppah with the broken glass underneath it. The dedication of a new house with an unfinished plaster as a remembrance of the destruction of the Temples. The Passover Seder and the bitter herbs. In Israel\, the tears of Yom HaZikaron touch the circles of dancers on Yom HaAtzmaut. Rabin knew joy and victory as well as tragedy and defeat.” November 4\, 2025 will mark 30 years since Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist. This three-part class is led by Rabbi Jan Katzew and will take place on Zoom.

Part memoir\, part history\, the book traces Sabar’s journey alongside his father\, a Jewish scholar born in a remote Kurdish village\, as he uncovers the extraordinary story of one of the world’s oldest and most isolated Jewish communities. Through personal narrative\, cultural history\, and themes of identity\, exile\, and belonging\, Sabar invites us into a moving exploration of heritage and the bonds between generations. \nAriel Sabar is an award-winning author and journalist. His debut\, My Father’s Paradise (2008)\, won the National Book Critics Circle Award. He has since published Heart of the City (2011)\, The Outsider (2014)\, and Veritas (2020)\, a finalist for both the Edgar Award and the Investigative Reporters and Editors Book Award. A contributing writer for The Atlantic\, his work has appeared in The New York Times\, Smithsonian\, Harper’s\, The Washington Post\, and This American Life. Sabar has reported globally\, taught creative writing at George Washington University\, and lectured at universities including Yale\, Brown\, and Georgetown.

Explore the 27 works on view and the stories behind their recent acquisition (or unearthing) by Simona: from an Italian Renaissance Torah binder\, and an Iraqi Torah case used in India— to a Yemenite woman’s festive headdress\, and a Torah Ark from 1920s Chelsea\, Massachusetts. Spanning five hundred years and four continents\, and featuring silver\, textiles\, furniture\, paintings\, and books- these works highlight the extraordinary diversity of Jewish cultures. SUMMARY:Our Constitution in the News
DESCRIPTION:Former federal court Judge Judith Barzilay\, who was also a Professor at William & Mary Law School\, will lead a two-part program taking a deeper dive into the text of the US Constitution and its import in the context of challenges\, developments and perspectives presented by current events. It is expected that the first session will focus on the body of the Constitution and that the second session will focus on amendments contained in the Bill of Rights. The actual program may be adjusted to address current events and court decisions at the time of the programs and their impact as well as consideration of impact on the Jewish community and issues of Tikkun Olam. \nThe first 100 registrants will receive a pocket-sized copy of the US Constitution for use during and after the program. Light desserts will also be provided. This is the second in a two-part series; new participants are welcome! \nAbout the speaker:\nJudge Barzilay was appointed to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in 1998 and spent 18 years as a judge on the US Court of International Trade in New York. She also sat by designation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on several US Appellate Courts and at trials for the Southern District of New York in cases of general federal jurisprudence. She has written and published over 200 judicial opinions on multiple topics. After her service on the bench\, Judge Barzilay joined the faculty of the law school at William and Mary in Williamsburg\, VA where she taught for 5 years. She holds a BA in English and Education from Wichita State University and holds a Master’s Degree and Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University.\nContact: Adult Learning
