From the Septuagint to Jewish life in Alexandria\, from the Maccabean response to the intellectual legacy of Philo\, he will trace the deep imprint of Greek ideas on the development of Jewish thought and identity. As we celebrate Chanukah\, a holiday born out of the encounter between Judaism and the Hellenistic world\, this program offers a timely and meaningful reflection on how Athens helped shape Jerusalem. Presented by the Orange County Community Scholars Program and sponsored by TBS Adult Learning. \nDr. David Mendelsohn holds a Ph.D. in Classics & Linguistics\, an M.A. in Archaeology/Linguistics\, and an Honours B.A. in Classical Studies. A recipient of Canada’s prestigious Trudeau Prize\, he lives in Jerusalem with his wife\, Ronny\, and their three children. For over 25 years\, Dr. Mendelsohn has researched Jewish communities across the world\, including in Germany\, Spain\, Portugal\, Morocco\, Eastern Europe\, Turkey\, Greece\, Italy\, Bulgaria\, Egypt\, and India. Combining his expertise as a historian\, archaeologist\, and sociolinguist\, he uncovers the unique influences of local cultures while identifying the shared threads that connect these diverse Jewish communities. A seasoned scholar and educator\, Dr. Mendelsohn has previously led Greece trips and specializes in Islamic Studies\, Arab-Israeli culture\, Bedouin law\, and the intersection of language and culture in Arabic and Hebrew.

The life of Yitzhak Rabin mirrored the life of the people and state of Israel. In his own words\, “The joy of the Jewish people is always mixed with sorrow – the huppah with the broken glass underneath it. The dedication of a new house with an unfinished plaster as a remembrance of the destruction of the Temples. The Passover Seder and the bitter herbs. In Israel\, the tears of Yom HaZikaron touch the circles of dancers on Yom HaAtzmaut. Rabin knew joy and victory as well as tragedy and defeat.” November 4\, 2025 will mark 30 years since Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist. This three-part class is led by Rabbi Jan Katzew and will take place on Zoom.

Part memoir\, part history\, the book traces Sabar’s journey alongside his father\, a Jewish scholar born in a remote Kurdish village\, as he uncovers the extraordinary story of one of the world’s oldest and most isolated Jewish communities. Through personal narrative\, cultural history\, and themes of identity\, exile\, and belonging\, Sabar invites us into a moving exploration of heritage and the bonds between generations. \nAriel Sabar is an award-winning author and journalist. His debut\, My Father’s Paradise (2008)\, won the National Book Critics Circle Award. He has since published Heart of the City (2011)\, The Outsider (2014)\, and Veritas (2020)\, a finalist for both the Edgar Award and the Investigative Reporters and Editors Book Award. A contributing writer for The Atlantic\, his work has appeared in The New York Times\, Smithsonian\, Harper’s\, The Washington Post\, and This American Life. DESCRIPTION:Former federal court Judge Judith Barzilay\, who was also a Professor at William & Mary Law School\, will lead a two-part program taking a deeper dive into the text of the US Constitution and its import in the context of challenges\, developments and perspectives presented by current events. It is expected that the first session will focus on the body of the Constitution and that the second session will focus on amendments contained in the Bill of Rights. The actual program may be adjusted to address current events and court decisions at the time of the programs and their impact as well as consideration of impact on the Jewish community and issues of Tikkun Olam. \nThe first 100 registrants will receive a pocket-sized copy of the US Constitution for use during and after the program. Light desserts will also be provided. This is the second in a two-part series; new participants are welcome! \nAbout the speaker:\nJudge Barzilay was appointed to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in 1998 and spent 18 years as a judge on the US Court of International Trade in New York. She also sat by designation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on several US Appellate Courts and at trials for the Southern District of New York in cases of general federal jurisprudence. She has written and published over 200 judicial opinions on multiple topics. After her service on the bench\, Judge Barzilay joined the faculty of the law school at William and Mary in Williamsburg\, VA where she taught for 5 years. DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, Jews around the world have generally avoided military involvement—especially in contexts where the armed forces showed little concern for their needs or identity as Jews. One of the most fascinating exceptions emerged in pre-State Palestine\, where\, beginning in 1907\, Jews under both Ottoman and British rule began forming their own defense organizations—sometimes against outside enemies\, and at times even against one another. This session will explore the evolution and impact of groups such as Hashomer\, the Jewish Legion\, the Jewish Brigade\, the Haganah\, Palmach\, Irgun\, and Lehi. SUMMARY:Dracula: Antisemitism and British Gothic Literature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating one-hour online conversation between Aaron Henne\, Artistic Director of theatre dybbuk\, and scholar and author Dr. Carol Margaret Davison. They will explore some of the history and insights which are brought to life in Davison’s book\, Anti-Semitism and British Gothic Literature. In that work\, Davison interprets the changing significance of the trans-national Wandering Jew in classic Gothic fiction\, and the character’s migration into Victorian realism.  She reveals how the spectres of Jewish difference and Jewish assimilation haunt British literature. The discussion will especially focus on Bram Stoker’s Dracula\, exploring the ways in which the societal concerns present at the time of its publication intersect with the prejudices and beliefs that are embedded in the text. This event precedes the world premiere of theatre dybbuk’s Dracula (Annotated)\, which uses a unique blend of scholarly investigation and heightened theatricality to weave together the plot and characters of Dracula with references to Victorian England and Jewish history. Dr. Davison has edited multiple influential collections and special journal issues\, and her work continues to shape the field of Gothic literary studies. \nAaron Henne is the founding artistic director of theatre dybbuk\, an organization that uses Jewish history to explore complex contemporary issues through the arts.
