DESCRIPTION:Join us for an adventure into one of Judaism’s most powerful symbols. In this hour-long workshop\, you will: \n\nLearn some little known shofar facts including how a shofar is made and which animals’ horns may become shofarot.\nCreate your own smaller shofar from an authentic horn. We will carefully be using a saw and drill (with expert guidance) to shape our own shofarot!\nLearn how to blow a shofar and experiment with traditional calls!\n\nWhether you’re 6 or 96\, this experience will deepen your connection to the High Holy Days and leave you with a meaningful keepsake—and maybe even a new skill! \nAll TBS shofar blowers – experienced and new! – are welcome be with us for our final Yom Kippur Service (“Ne’ilah”) (Thursday\, October 2nd at 6:00 pm) and usher in the new year by participating in the final blast of the shofar!

DESCRIPTION:This info session was originally scheduled for Tuesday\, August 26 and rescheduled due to a conflict for the presenter.  \nThe Cuba core trip will span 6 days with an optional extension for an additional 2 days. Rabbi Todd and Michele Markley will lead the core trip\, and we will be guided by Ayelet’s local Cuban tour guide who will be with us for all of the travel days. We will be holding a trip information session for interested travelers on Sunday\, September 7\, at 10 am.  Please register below for the information session. If you are not able to attend but are interested in the trip\, feel free to let Rabbi Todd know so we can keep you in the loop about our travel plans following the information session and can share the video recording of the session with you afterwards. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of jazz featuring music by Jewish composers\, performed by Elliot Steger in concert with Jon Hazilla on drums and David Landoni on bass. We will feature Jewish composers such as Billy Joel and Rodgers & Hammerstein as well as original compositions. Elliot’s compositions emphasize a strong melody line appreciated by even those unfamiliar with jazz. Light refreshments will be served. Cost: $20. Contact Cantor DJ with any questions. Cosponsored by ConNEXTions+. \nElliot Steger is a jazz pianist and composer who has produced 5 CD’s of original music. He was the featured artist on radio station WICN’s Jazz New England program and was a finalist for best jazz instrumental song of the year. He began classical lessons at age 4 and studied jazz with a professor from the Berklee College of Music for 20 years. His music can be heard on Spotify\, Amazon Music and YouTube. He has played at many venues in the Boston area and has donated all proceeds from CD sales and performances to the Alzheimer’s Association\, the American Cancer Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.\nHe is joined by Jon Hazilla on drums\, a professor at the Berklee College of Music\, a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music\, and performer at numerous International Jazz festivals. DESCRIPTION:Former federal court Judge Judith Barzilay\, who was also a Professor at William & Mary Law School\, will lead a two-part program taking a deeper dive into the text of the US Constitution and its import in the context of challenges\, developments and perspectives presented by current events. It is expected that the first session will focus on the body of the Constitution and that the second session will focus on amendments contained in the Bill of Rights. The actual program may be adjusted to address current events and court decisions at the time of the programs and their impact as well as consideration of impact on the Jewish community and issues of Tikkun Olam. \nThe first 100 registrants will receive a pocket-sized copy of the US Constitution for use during and after the program. Light desserts will also be provided. \nAbout the speaker:\nJudge Barzilay was appointed to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in 1998 and spent 18 years as a judge on the US Court of International Trade in New York. She also sat by designation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on several US Appellate Courts and at trials for the Southern District of New York in cases of general federal jurisprudence. She has written and published over 200 judicial opinions on multiple topics. After her service on the bench\, Judge Barzilay joined the faculty of the law school at William and Mary in Williamsburg\, VA where she taught for 5 years.
