SUMMARY:Where Are You in Relation to Israel?
DESCRIPTION:In a short\, compelling book entitled Jews and Words\, Amos Oz and his daughter Fania Oz-Salzberger\, wrote that the Jewish people are not related by bloodlines\, but rather by text-lines. Over seven sessions\, we will study some of the texts that connect the people of Israel to the land of Israel and the State of Israel. I hope that everyone who chooses to participate in this course of study will grow their personal relationships with the other people in the cohort and with Israel. Our goal will be to deepen and thicken our relationships to Israel\, and to increase Ahavat Yisrael – “love of Israel\,” – including both the people and the place. Please join us for any\, and hopefully\, every session! Register: t-b-s.me/relations \nDuring our series\, our topic titles will include: \n\nIsrael in Perspective: Zionism as a Response to Modernity\nIsrael in Perspective: The Zionist Idea\nOne State\, Many Midwives\nA State of Ideals is not the Same as an Ideal State\nBe Careful What You Pray For\nNot All Wars Are the Same\nThe Story of Hatikvah\n\nAll sessions will be recorded. Rabbi Elyse Pincus Abrahams will be joining Rabbi Katzew throughout the series to bring additional wisdom and insight. \nOur Teacher: Rabbi Jan Katzew \nRabbi Katzew\, PhD is Associate Professor Emeritus of Jewish Thought and Education and Senior Educator of the EMA Program at HUC-JIR. After serving for six years as rabbi/educator at The Community Synagogue in Port Washington\, NY\, Jan became a Jerusalem Fellow and earned a doctorate at the Hebrew University in Jewish Thought and Education. For fifteen years Jan led a team of educators at the Union for Reform Judaism that was responsible for designing\, developing\, and implementing curricular resources for early childhood centers\, congregational schools\, day schools and adult learning communities throughout the world. Since its inception in 2008\, Jan has been a senior consultant to the iCenter for Israel Education\, mentoring students from multiple graduate schools and seminaries to become Israel educators\, a task made even more important after October 7\, 2023. Jan is the author of popular and scholarly articles in multiple fields that include Interfaith dialogue\, Mussar\, Medieval Hebrew Poetry\, Israel Education\, Moral Development\, and educational philosophy and practice.

SUMMARY:"Life Without Parole: Not a "Get-Out-of-Jail-Free" Proposition
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that you could be convicted of a crime you did not commit\, but may have participated in\, under a little-known—and confusing–theory called “Joint Venture”? A joint venturer is someone who aids in the commission of a crime. The actual perpetrator may serve his or her time and be released while\, in Massachusetts\, the joint venturer can be sentenced to life without parole. “Felony murder” laws hold people liable for murder if they participated in a felony\, such as a robbery\, that resulted in someone’s death. These laws impose sentences on people who neither intended to kill nor anticipated a death\, and even on those who did not participate in the killing. One out of six people incarcerated in Massachusetts is serving a LWOP sentence\, thus stripped of hope and denied their capacity to rehabilitate. Shockingly\, Massachusetts is second only to Louisiana for having the highest percentage in the country of those incarcerated serving LWOP. The Coalition to End Life Without Parole (CELWOP) supports An Act to Reduce Mass Incarceration and The Elder Parole Bill. These bills would eliminate LWOP by mandating parole review eligibility in all instances starting at 25 years of incarceration\, stopping prisons from acting as nursing homes\, and establishing restorative justice programs for those incarcerated in Massachusetts on sentences in excess of 25 years. Learn about CELWOP’s work with faith-based groups\, unions\, schools and colleges\, community-based and activist organizations\, to challenge false the narrative that people convicted of violent offenses are irredeemable and undeserving of a second chance. Hear directly from formerly incarcerated panelists\, followed by Q&A. Panel will be moderated by Cynthia Kussy-Goldberg\, Community Organizer for CELWOP and Director of the F8Foundation\, which helps men and women who are returning to society acclimate and succeed. \nWith gratitude to the Jewish Alliance of Law and Social Action for supporting this platform. \nRegister: t-b-s.me/lifewithoutparole
