SUMMARY:MAST presents: Dr. Joan Lurie
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joan Lurie discussing UNWRA\, NGO’s and United Nation’s Antisemitism \nJoan has a doctorate in Physics and is an expert on observing the Earth using data from satellites. Joan with four colleagues has represented International Council of Jewish Women (ICJW) at the United Nations in New York as an NGO for more than 15 years. As a lifelong Zionist\, Joan is passionate about the need for peace in the Middle East. She believes that the “path to peace begins in the classroom”\, but not in the classroom run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency(UNRWA). At the U.N. Joan serves as Vice Chair of the recently formed UN Committee entitled “End Antisemitism and Promote Peace (EASAPP). She became aware that the UNRWA education and summer camp programs for half a million Palestinian children for over seventy years\, has consistently incited students to murder and martyrdom and support the “Right of Return”. During the current war between Israel and Hamas\, much of the world has realized that peace is not possible while UNRWA continues to teach the “War of Return”. She has co-authored several papers and regularly lectures on the subject. As a UN representative\, Joan is a member of the Executive Committee of ICJW and interacts with other members from 33 countries including representatives from the U.N. in Geneva\, Paris and Vienna. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Erev Shabbat Service
DESCRIPTION:If you are a TBS member who would like to join us virtually\, please check your Shabbat Shalom email for the link. \n  \nCelebrating 50 Years of Women in the Cantorate\nA Special Sharing by Cantor Lanie Katzew\nFriday\, May 30th at 6:15 pm \nThere are many memorable “firsts” in Jewish life.  In 1975\, the Reform Jewish community welcomed Cantor Barbara Ostfeld as the first female to be\nordained by the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. Fifty years have passed and the sea change of that “first” has been felt widely.\nCantor Ostfeld gracefully led the way toward full musical equality of wome on the bimah and she movingly\, musically inspired a generation along the\nway. Please join us as Cantor Lanie Katzew shares a snapshot of how her own experience as a cantor over the last 44 years marks the highlights of the\npath that Cantor Ostfeld trail-blazed. \nOur Presenter:  Cantor Alane (Lanie) Katzew has helped bring Jewish sacred music into the digital age. Cantor Katzew served as Director of Music\nProgramming for synagogues throughout North America and on the American Conference of Cantors board. She has produced publications\, recordings\, and\nconcerts at the Union for Reform Judaism\, serving over 900 congregations as their Worship & Music Specialist. Among her myriad recordings and songbooks\,\nCantor Katzew produced and uploaded digital recordings of the entire Torah and Haftarah. Cantor Katzew has proudly introduced adults and young people\nto Jewish sacred music\, part of her lifelong commitment to community service\, social justice\, and youth issues.  She and her husband\, Rabbi Jan Katzew are thrilled to be new members of the TBS community.

SUMMARY:The Michael Sockol Jewish Writers Fund presents: Rabbi Jan Katzew - Israel: The Challenge(s) of Jewish Democracy
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 1st\, the Michael Sockol Jewish Writers Fund\, in partnership with TBS Adult Learning\, will present noted educator and speaker Rabbi Jan Katzew. Rabbi Katzew\, PhD\, is Associate Professor Emeritus of Jewish Thought and Education and a Senior Educator at HUC-JIR. He is a Jerusalem Fellow and earned his doctorate at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. For many years\, Rabbi Katzew served as Director of Lifelong Jewish Learning at the URJ\, where he oversaw the design of curricular resources for world-wide use\, and received numerous honors as a Jewish educator. He has authored popular and scholarly articles in multiple fields\, including Jewish history\, inter-faith relations\, ethics\, and philosophy. Israel is not an ideal state\, but it is a state of ideals. Since before its inception in 1948\, the State of Israel has aspired to realize twin nobilities\, to bridge the Torah that emanated from Jerusalem and the political philosophy that emanated from Athens. Seventy-seven years later\, the goal of being a Jewish and democratic state remains elusive and arguably more difficult to achieve. The jury and the Jewry\, of which we are a part\, are still out. In his talk\, Rabbi Katzew will explore the many complex challenges facing modern-day Israel\, as the nation seeks the norms and values of a democracy while maintaining\, building upon\, and defending its core Jewish identity. Refreshments will be served. To register\, go tot-b-s.me/jewishdemocracy. Free for members; $10 for non-members. For more info\, contact: adultlearning@tbsneedham.org
