SUMMARY:"All Theology is Autobiography": Developing a Personal Understanding of God
DESCRIPTION:“All Theology is Autobiography” is the title of a reflective\, inspiring article by Rabbi Laura Geller\, Rabbi Emerita of Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills\, CA. It is also a profound and sacred truth. The main goal of this four-session course is to provide a context for each participant to engage in developing a personal theology. What in your life has contributed to your personal “torah”\, the essence of your evolving character? When have you felt close to God? When have you prayed\, really prayed? We will enter into a conversation that spans Jewish time trying to learn about God by reflecting on our life experiences. Along the way we will “meet” some of the great Jewish theologians of all time and of our time. \nRabbi Katzew is Associate Professor Emeritus of Jewish Thought and Education and Senior Educator of the EMA Program at HUC-JIR. He earned a doctorate at the Hebrew University in Jewish Thought and Education and led a team of educators at the Union for Reform Judaism that was responsible for designing\, developing\, and implementing curricular resources for early childhood centers\, congregational schools\, day schools and adult learning communities throughout the world. Jan is the author of several popular and scholarly articles in multiple fields. We are blessed to have Rabbi Katzew as a TBS Scholar throughout the year!

SUMMARY:Becoming Janet: A Holocaust Survivor's Journey
DESCRIPTION:Child Holocaust survivor\, Janet Singer Applefield (originally named “Gustawa”)\, has touched hundreds of thousands of people as a public speaker over the last 40 years. Her new memoir\, Becoming Janet: Finding Myself in the Holocaust\, shares her poignant journey as she triumphs over the darkest chapter in human history and maneuvers through terrifying situations that would paralyze most adults. The book reveals how hidden children\, periodically viewed as passive victims\, are often participants in their own survival. Ironically\, in her unique story\, the people who inflicted the lasting wounds on Janet were distant relatives\, while a few altruistic strangers protected her like family. \n“At a young age I learned the importance of secrecy and resilience. Without that\, there would likely be no memoir to write. Every time I speak\, it’s as if the 1\,500\,000 murdered children come back to listen. After the war\, my father emphasized the need to keep learning about what happened and to retell our story. He instilled in me the duty to speak for those who cannot. It’s a privilege to give voice to those children. That is what continues to give me a sense of purpose.” – Janet Singer Applefield \nPlease join the TBS Antisemitism Awareness Initiative (ASAI) as Janet shares her personal journey. There will be a Q&A\, meet and greet\, and breakfast will be served. If you want to learn more\, you are welcome to buy a copy of Janet’s book at the event or ahead of time.
