Combating the Violence of Hate

Join us on Sunday, January 26th at 9:30 am for Dr. Levin who co-authored the first book in which the “hate crime” concept was introduced and profiled. During the 1990s, the majority of hate crimes were perpetrated by “dabblers”--teenagers and young adults looking for a thrill. After 9/11, however, hate-motivated crimes became more defensive from the perpetrators’ viewpoint, as Americans in the mainstream perceived being victimized by cumulative threats to their survival, economic well-being, traditional marriage, racial heritage, and cultural values. In recent years, moreover, hate rhetoric coming from the top of society has encouraged larger numbers of hate crimes being committed at the bottom. Based on systematic research as well as his personal experiences, Dr. Levin suggests several effective measures for combating hate-motivated attacks.
