Two enduring images of the Civil Rights Movement are photographs of Abraham Joshua Heschel marching with Martin Luther King, Jr., and the brutal murders of Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Jews are indeed proud — and deservedly so — of our participation in the Civil Rights Movement. But these images capture only part of the story. In the South, particularly in states where the Civil Rights battles were occurring, many Jews had a different perspective on the movement. How then do we understand “Jews in the Civil Rights Movement”?
The course is comprised of three sessions:
Race, Racism, and Civil Rights in America
Responsibility, Obligation, and Mitzvah (Part 1): The Civil Rights Movement in the Jim Crow South (1954-1965)
Responsibility, Obligation, and Mitzvah (Part 2): Structural racism in the United States
