DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating one-hour online conversation between Aaron Henne\, Artistic Director of theatre dybbuk\, and scholar and author Dr. Carol Margaret Davison. They will explore some of the history and insights which are brought to life in Davison’s book\, Anti-Semitism and British Gothic Literature. In that work\, Davison interprets the changing significance of the trans-national Wandering Jew in classic Gothic fiction\, and the character’s migration into Victorian realism.  She reveals how the spectres of Jewish difference and Jewish assimilation haunt British literature. The discussion will especially focus on Bram Stoker’s Dracula\, exploring the ways in which the societal concerns present at the time of its publication intersect with the prejudices and beliefs that are embedded in the text. This event precedes the world premiere of theatre dybbuk’s Dracula (Annotated)\, which uses a unique blend of scholarly investigation and heightened theatricality to weave together the plot and characters of Dracula with references to Victorian England and Jewish history. DESCRIPTION:In the 1920s\, the Jewish National Fund relocated its operations from Europe to Jerusalem\, bringing with it a bold vision for documenting—and directing—the story of the Jewish people in the land of Israel. One of its first major initiatives was the creation of a groundbreaking photographic archive\, conceived not merely as a record of events but as a tool for shaping collective memory and mobilizing support. These striking images played a central role in fundraising campaigns\, public outreach\, and the construction of a new national narrative in pre-state Palestine. From portraits of pioneers to depictions of settlement and transformation\, the archive helped define how the Zionist enterprise was seen both at home and abroad. Between 2016-2022\, she served as Chief Curator at American Jewish University\, where she was also Assistant Dean of the Whizin Center for Continuing Education and Senior Director of Arts and Creative Programming. Her book\, Pre-State Photographic Archives and the Zionist Movement\, was published in 2023 (Routledge)\, and was named recipient of the Jordan Schnitzer First Book Award by the Association for Jewish Studies. Also in 2023\, Rotem edited and contributed a text to the artist book Itinerarium by photo-collage artist Shay Zilberman. Rotem has been researching the intersections of photo-based art\, technology and visual culture for nearly two decades and is currently working on a nonfiction memoir project that is inspired by this work. She is also a lecturer at USC Roski School of Art and Design Critical Studies Department. Rotem mentors artists worldwide and contributes regularly to magazines\, journals and exhibition catalogues. Her writings about contemporary art and image-based media were published in Artforum\, Photographies\, Jewish Currents\, Tablet and Forward\, among other outlets. Her essay\, “Call the Midlife\,” will be published in Afterimage in 2025\, and her story\, “A Scar\, Visible Only to Me\,” was recently published in the anthology Scars by Beyond Words Magazine.

Works by Kahn are in major museum collections\, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, NYC; the Houston Museum of Fine Arts\, TX; The Phillips Collection\, DC; Albright-Knox Art Gallery\, Buffalo\, NY; Minneapolis Institute of Art\, MN; Yale University Art Gallery\, CT; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, Philadelphia\, PA; and The Jewish Museum\, NYC. In 2022\, The Phillips Collection in Washington\, D.C. installed a unit of 7 paintings that are part of the museum’s permanent collection with works from 1977-2020. Kahn also communicates his vision through his passion for teaching. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joan Lurie discussing UNWRA\, NGO’s and United Nation’s Antisemitism \nJoan has a doctorate in Physics and is an expert on observing the Earth using data from satellites. Joan with four colleagues has represented International Council of Jewish Women (ICJW) at the United Nations in New York as an NGO for more than 15 years. As a lifelong Zionist\, Joan is passionate about the need for peace in the Middle East. She believes that the “path to peace begins in the classroom”\, but not in the classroom run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency(UNRWA). At the U.N. Joan serves as Vice Chair of the recently formed UN Committee entitled “End Antisemitism and Promote Peace (EASAPP). She became aware that the UNRWA education and summer camp programs for half a million Palestinian children for over seventy years\, has consistently incited students to murder and martyrdom and support the “Right of Return”. During the current war between Israel and Hamas\, much of the world has realized that peace is not possible while UNRWA continues to teach the “War of Return”. She has co-authored several papers and regularly lectures on the subject. As a UN representative\, Joan is a member of the Executive Committee of ICJW and interacts with other members from 33 countries including representatives from the U.N. in Geneva\, Paris and Vienna. \nRegister here.

DESCRIPTION:In a short\, compelling book entitled Jews and Words\, Amos Oz and his daughter Fania Oz-Salzberger\, wrote that the Jewish people are not related by bloodlines\, but rather by text-lines. Over seven sessions\, we will study some of the texts that connect the people of Israel to the land of Israel and the State of Israel. I hope that everyone who chooses to participate in this course of study will grow their personal relationships with the other people in the cohort and with Israel. Our goal will be to deepen and thicken our relationships to Israel\, and to increase Ahavat Yisrael – “love of Israel\,” – including both the people and the place.
