Celebrating 50 Years of Women in the Cantorate
A Special Sharing by Cantor Lanie Katzew
Friday, May 30th at 6:15 pm

There are many memorable “firsts” in Jewish life.  In 1975, the Reform Jewish community welcomed Cantor Barbara Ostfeld as the first female to be
ordained by the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. Fifty years have passed and the sea change of that “first” has been felt widely.
Cantor Ostfeld gracefully led the way toward full musical equality of wome on the bimah and she movingly, musically inspired a generation along the
way. Please join us as Cantor Lanie Katzew shares a snapshot of how her own experience as a cantor over the last 44 years marks the highlights of the
path that Cantor Ostfeld trail-blazed.

Our Presenter:  Cantor Alane (Lanie) Katzew has helped bring Jewish sacred music into the digital age. Cantor Katzew served as Director of Music
Programming for synagogues throughout North America and on the American Conference of Cantors board. She has produced publications, recordings, and
concerts at the Union for Reform Judaism, serving over 900 congregations as their Worship & Music Specialist. Among her myriad recordings and songbooks,
Cantor Katzew produced and uploaded digital recordings of the entire Torah and Haftarah. Cantor Katzew has proudly introduced adults and young people
to Jewish sacred music, part of her lifelong commitment to community service, social justice, and youth issues.  She and her husband, Rabbi Jan Katzew are thrilled to be new members of the TBS community.
