WHAT YOU’LL DO

At a time of tremendous growth and opportunity, TBS seeks an Executive Director to provide strategic oversight of key functional areas of the congregation. This position will join our Senior Leadership Team, serve as a trusted partner to clergy, staff, lay leaders, volunteers and members, and advance TBS’ mission to provide a deep sense of belonging to our congregation and commitment to one another. This is a highly visible role that touches all facets of temple life. Specifically, the Executive Director will:

Ensure a powerful Jewish community experience through operational excellence and member engagement

  • Provide strategic leadership and hands-on management of key functional areas: office administration, finance, human resources, technology, communications, development, events, safety & security, facilities, and membership.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor a team of direct reports inclusive of an Office Administrator, Fractional Chief Financial Officer, Director of People & Culture, IT Systems Administrator, Communications & Program Manager, Associate Director of Philanthropy, Kitchen Manager, Events Manager, and Facilities Manager.
  • Proactively anticipate and address operational challenges and needs to better support congregational growth, new capital projects, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Serve as primary point person for membership, working collaboratively with staff and lay leaders, ensuring that prospective and new members have a positive overall membership experience.
  • In partnership with senior leadership, finance team, and finance committee, serve as a thought partner for the annual budgeting process.
  • In partnership with the Director of People & Culture, support the smooth delivery of day-to-day HR.
  • In partnership with the Facilities Manager, ensure the sound management of building maintenance, safety, and security.
  • Plan and oversee the logistics for the High Holy Days, in conjunction with staff and lay leaders, ensuring a seamless and joyful experience for the community. For all observances, support the activities of the Welcome Corps (staff and volunteers) and technology team.
  • Working cross-functionally, oversee the management and usage of member database, inclusive of maintaining accurate information and leveraging data to identify leadership and engagement opportunities for members.
  • Liaise with lay leader led membership engagement committee, building/security committee, community affinity groups demonstrating responsiveness to lay leaders’ requests and providing support or leadership where needed.
  • Support the planning and execution of Board of Trustees and Leadership Council Meetings.

Serve as a senior leader, collaborative colleague and champion for TBS’ mission, vision, and values

  • As a member of the senior management team, contribute to guiding overall organizational strategic direction, decision-making, prioritization, and goals.
  • Serve as a thought partner to senior leaders and drive cross-functional coordination with all aspects of temple life e.g. education, engagement, worship.
  • Wear multiple hats as a part of a fast-paced, busy organization, supporting the work of others and taking on new projects/tasks as needed and keeping an eye on the broader needs of the community.

WORK LOCATION AND HOURS

This position works onsite at Temple Beth Shalom in Needham, MA. Hours are typically 9am-5pm, with some evening, weekend, and holiday responsibilities. The temple is conveniently accessible from Route 95/128 or the MBTA commuter rail.    

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $175,000 – $200,000, along with a generous benefits package that includes medical insurance, dental insurance, flexible spending account, medical supplement plan, 4 weeks vacation. WHAT YOU’LL DO

Provide strategic leadership for the organization-wide HR function.

  • Develop and implement strategies that align HR activities with TBS’s overarching goals and values and reflect best practices for attracting, developing, motivating, compensating, and retaining staff.
  • Build upon and ensure existing systems, processes, and policies are consistent, scalable, and people-centric and design new solutions that optimize operational efficiency and improve employee experience.
  • Lead strategic workforce and succession planning efforts to ensure the organization is equipped for future growth.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and thought partner to the senior leadership team by sharing strategic insights, workforce trends, and support for complex talent challenges.  

In partnership with directors and managers, oversee the smooth delivery of day-to-day HR activities and create the conditions for staff to do their best work.

  • Oversee and provide support to managers in the execution of full-cycle talent management inclusive of recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training and development, and performance management.
  • Build upon and refine existing goal setting and performance evaluation processes, ensuring all employees have clear expectations and goals that are aligned with departmental and organizational objectives. 
  • Serve as a trusted point person for all employee relations, exercising deep listening and conflict resolution with staff in partnership with managers and fostering healthy communication and trust between and among team members.
  • Work closely with staff accountant and controller who are responsible for payroll and benefits administration, and support hiring managers with background checks, employee files, and required reporting.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of state and federal paperwork such as Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML), workers’ compensation, and unemployment filings.

Foster a positive work culture that is reflective of TBS’ greater community.

  • Promote and grow a culture that is centered around relationships and celebrates community, appreciation, wellness, mental health, inclusivity, and learning.
  • Identify and organize opportunities for continuous staff learning and engagement e.g. DEIB, conflict resolution, leadership skills training.
  • Create initiatives for staff to connect with each other, lay leaders, and members, and participate in the broader TBS community.
  • Administer the biannual employee experience survey, analyzing data to identify opportunities to improve staff experience and satisfaction.

WORK LOCATION AND HOURS

The salary range for this position is $115,000 – $130,000K, along with a generous benefits package that includes medical insurance, dental insurance, flexible spending account, retirement plan, medical supplement plan, sick time, three weeks vacation and paid holidays, and synagogue membership (if desired). Employees who wish to enroll early childhood and/or school-aged children in our learning programs receive a discount off tuition.

This fund is used to support the programmatic and capital endeavors of our Children’s Center.

This fund helps to maintain and supply our TBS Library with outstanding books, texts, and other essential resources.

This fund provides music for the enrichment of Shabbat and Holiday Services and helps provide special music programs throughout the year.

Refugee Resettlement Fund

This fund provides support for refugees in crisis across the globe. Contributions to the TBS Refugee Resettlement Fund support refugees resettling in the Boston/Needham area, provide aid for refugees around the world through financial support from global organizations, create opportunities for activism, purchase supplies sent to refugee camps and support organizations, and other refugee aid endeavors.

Security Fund

This fund is used to sustain and enhance all hardware, programs, and protocols that ensure our community’s security.

Sanctuary & Worship Fund

This fund is used to help sustain the beauty and proper use of our Sanctuary and Beit Midrash.

Sanctuary Flower Fund

This fund, utilized mostly by our Beth Shalom Garden Club, ensures that beautiful flowers adorn our bima on Shabbat and during holidays and are available for special programs throughout the year.

Tikkun Olam Fund

This fund supports all activities by the TBS community that work towards helping to achieve a just, compassionate, and peaceful society.

This fund is used to support the programmatic and capital endeavors for children in grades K-12.

Jerry Arransky Passport to Israel Fund

This fund supports the Passport to Israel program which helps to fund trips to Israel for Temple Beth Shalom high school students.

Dr. Ted Chamberlain Interfaith Fellowship Fund

Chamberlain Interfaith Fellowship was established by David and Sydney Feldman in memory of a beloved friend, Dr. Ted Chamberlain. The program builds bridges of understanding between the Jewish and Christian communities. In partnership with Eastern University in Philadelphia, the Chamberlain Interfaith Fellowship program annually brings together four TBS high school students and four college students from Eastern for a year-long immersive experience learning about the educational, spiritual, and relational aspects of both Judaism and Christianity.

Feldman Community Outreach Fund

This fund is used to support strong interfaith relationships between the TBS community and those in the community at large. These efforts include but are not limited to the support of Project Ezra (our annual Christmas Dinner program) and the Chamberlain Interfaith Fellowship program.

Gersten-Hoisington Scholar in Residence Fund
This fund has been established in loving memory of Shirley Gersten-Hoisington and Sumner Hoisington. As Shirley and Sumner were deeply dedicated to the Temple Beth Shalom community and adult learning in particular, this fund helps to support Temple Beth Shalom’s annual hosting of an outstanding guest scholar or presenter as part of a weekend program.

S. David Goldberg Memorial Fund

This is a named general fund of the Temple.

Irma and Kivi Grebber Memorial Fund

This fund provides children who are members of the Temple community scholarship assistance to help them attend a Jewish camp, a special Jewish educational program, or participate in a trip to Israel.

Patti and Louis Grossman Education Scholarship Fund

This fund provides scholarship funds for our TBS learning programs (formal and informal education – preschool through high school) to families experiencing financial hardship.

Rachel Happel Faculty Learning Fund

This fund supports professional development and adult-level learning for Temple Beth Shalom’s K-12 educators and staff.

Richard Todd Sacks Lifelong Jewish Learning Fund

This fund supports adult learning seminars, classes, and activities sponsored by TBS.

Ned Saltzberg Memorial Fund

This fund is used to subsidize special activities and field trips for students in grades K-5.

Amy Sanker Kappel Memorial Fund

Funds are used to provide an outstanding special program experience for children/teens who participate in our TBS congregational trips to Israel.

Marjorie Silver Camp Fund

This fund helps TBS families with financial need send their children to Jewish overnight summer camp. Created in loving memory of Marjorie Silver by her family, this fund celebrates the important role overnight summer camp played in Margie’s life growing up and continues to play in Jim’s and Margie’s family to this day. In their words: “The goal of this fund is to have as many Jewish children develop their own friendships, memories, and ideals through camping which they may carry forward through their own lives.”

Michael Sockol Jewish Writers Fund

The Michael Sockol Jewish Writers Fund enables TBS to invite outstanding writers to our community so that they might share their writing with adults and youth.

K-12 Logistics & Administration Coordinator

K-12 Logistics & Administration Coordinator

Temple Beth Shalom is seeking a warm, detail-oriented, collaborative problem-solver to be our next K-12 Logistics and Communications Coordinator. The position will begin on May 1, 2025.

ABOUT TBS K-12 LEARNING PROGRAMS

TBS offers a rich and robust selection of afternoon Jewish learning programs for about 675 children in grades K-12. It is our version of what is often called “religious school” in other communities, but it is a completely different approach to learning in a congregational setting. Our curriculum is built on the twin pillars of “Deep Relationships” and “Deep Learning.” Learn more about K-12 programs at tbslearning.org.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The K-12 Logistics and Administrations Coordinator (LAC) works in close partnership with our K-12 Leadership Team and faculty to bring to life our vision for excellence in learning. The K-12 LAC is a critical part of the team, tying together all of the logistical and administrative details that keep things humming and thriving. 

Responsibilities:

The K-12 LAC is responsible for transportation management, communication, daily administrative tasks, scheduling, event logistics, organizing supplies and equipment, maintaining systems for attendance and dismissal, and more. The K-12 LAC also works closely with the TBS Kitchen Manager on daily food service for children. Details about individual responsibilities may be provided upon request.

Schedule:

During the school year (September to June), the hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 10:00 am-6:30 pm. There is some flexibility with this schedule during the summer months (July-August). Our desired start date is May 5, 2025.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range is $55,000-58,000 per year. TBS offers generous benefits for full-time employees, including medical insurance, dental insurance, retirement contributions, flexible spending plans.
